Our Students, Our Philly, Our Future is a grass-roots coalition that aims to rally the city of Philadelphia in a movement to protect and preserve the public education of our students. In light of the threatening financial problems facing public schools today, it is our organization’s mission to aggressively advocate for the students of Philadelphia to ensure that all of our city’s children have access to the quality public education that they deserve.
Statistics illustrate the great gains that Philadelphia’s public schools have made over the past 8 years. 158 schools (58%) made adequate yearly progress, for the first time more than half the city’s students met state standards, and there has been a 29% drop in violent incidents over the past two years. It is undeniable that schools are improving, our students are being enriched, and that Philadelphia education is headed in the right direction. This is positive progress that our organization will not allow impending budget cuts to derail.
Our Students, Our Philly, Our Future recognizes that it will require the collective passion and strength of Philadelphia’s community of parents, students, teachers and leaders to make our student’s needs heard. Dear High School Students:

How inspired are you by the thousands of students from Wisconsin high schools who began walking out of class four days ago and have now occupied the State Capitol building and its grounds in Madison, demanding that the governor stop his assault on teachers and other government workers? I have to say it's one of the most exciting things I've seen in years.

We are, right now, living in an amazing moment of history. And this moment has happened because the youth around the world have decided they've had enough. Young people are in revolt -- and it's about time.

You, the students and young adults, from Cairo, Egypt to Madison, Wisconsin, are now rising up, taking to the streets, organizing, protesting and refusing to move until your voices are heard. Effing amazing!! It has scared the pants off those in power, the adults who were so convinced they had done a heckuva job trying to dumb you down and distract you with useless nonsense so that you'd end up feeling powerless, just another cog in the wheel, another brick in the wall. You've been fed a lot of propaganda about "how the system works" and so many lies about what took place in history that I'm amazed you've been able to sort through all the bs and see the truth for what it is. This was all done in the hopes you would just keep your mouths shut, get in line and follow orders. And don't rock the boat. Because if you do, you could end up without a good job! You could end up looking like a freak! You've been told politics isn't cool and that one person really can't make a difference.

And for some beautiful, unknown reason, you've refused to listen. Maybe it's because you've figured out that we adults are about to hand you a very empty and increasingly miserable world, with its melting polar ice caps, its low-paying jobs, its incessant war machine, and its plan to put you in permanent debt at age 18 with the racket known as college loans.

On top of that, you've had to listen to adults tell you that you may not be able to legally marry the person you love, that your uterus isn't really yours to control, and that if a black guy somehow makes it into the White House, he must've entered illegally from Kenya.

Yet, from what I've seen, the vast majority of you have rejected all of this crap. Never forget that it was you, the young people, who made Barack Obama president. First you formed his army of election volunteers to get him the nomination. Then you came out in record numbers in November of 2008. Did you know that the only age group where Obama won the white vote was with 18-29-year-olds? The majority of every white age group over 29 yrs. old voted for McCain -- and yet Obama still won! How'd that happen? Because there were so many youth voters of all races -- a record turnout that overcame the vast numbers of fearful white adults who simply couldn't see someone whose middle name was Hussein in the Oval Office. Thank you young voters for making that happen!

Young people elsewhere in the world, most notably in the Middle East, have taken to the streets and overthrown dictatorial governments without firing a shot. Their courage has inspired others to take a stand. There's a huge momentum right now, a youth-backed mojo that can't and won't be stopped.

Although I've long since left your age group, I've been so inspired by recent events that I'd like to do my bit and lend a hand. I've decided to turn over a part of my website to high school students so they -- you -- can have the opportunity to get the word out to millions more people. For a long time I've wondered, how come we don't hear the true voices of teenagers in our mainstream media? Why is your voice any less valid than an adult's?

In high schools all across America, students have great ideas to make things better or to question what is going on -- and often these thoughts and opinions are ignored or silenced. How often in school is the will of the student body ignored? How many students today will try to speak out, to stand up for something important, to simply try to right a wrong -- and will be swiftly shut down by those in authority, or by other students themselves?

I've seen students over the years attempt to participate in the democratic process only to be told that high schools aren't democracies and that they have no rights (even though the Supreme Court has said that a student doesn't give up his or her rights "when they enter the schoolhouse door").

It's always amazed me how adults preach to young people about what a great "democracy" we have, but when students seek to be part of it, they are reminded that they are not full citizens yet and must behave somehow as indentured servants. Is it any wonder then why some students, when they become adults, don't feel like participating in our political system -- because they've been taught by example for the past 12 years that they have no say in the decisions that affect them?

We like to say that we have this great "free press," and yet how free are high school newspapers? How free are you to write or blog about what you want? I've been sent stories from teenagers that they couldn't get published at school. Why not? Why must we silence or keep out of sight the voice of our teenagers?

It's not that way in other countries. The voting age in places like Austria, Brazil or Nicaragua is 16. In France, students can shut down the country by simply walking out of school and taking to the streets.

But here in the U.S. you're told to obey and to basically butt out and let the adults run the show.

Let's change that! I'm starting something on my site called, "HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER." Here you will be able to write what you want and I will publish it. I will also post those articles that you've tried to get published at your school but were turned down. On my site you will have freedom and an open forum and a chance to have your voice heard by millions.

I've asked my 17-year-old niece, Molly, to kick things off by editing this page for the first six months. She will ask you to send her your stories and ideas and the best ones will be posted on MichaelMoore.com. I'll give you the platform you deserve. It will be my honor to have you on my site and I encourage you to take advantage of it.

You are often called "our future." That future is today, right here, right now. You've already proven you can change the world. Keep doing it. And I'd be honored to help you.

This year we decided to go all out for our annual skateboard art show. We managed to get over 80 of the most talented artist around to contribute to this years show and also recruited help from 3 of Philadelphia's favorite galleries Amberella, Jinxed, and Jolie Laide for a special collaborative project. This will be a night to remember. Never before has Philly been able to pack this much art, skateboarding, and Philly Love into 4 walls!

Hello students of Room 122! I am excited to be a part of such a dynamic group of talented artists. During my time at Northeast HS, I will be posting a little about the projects we work on and the artists we discuss in class. I also hope to share a bit about the people I find inspiring. As a painter, I have always been drawn to artists who incorporate patterns, textiles, muted colors, and dreamy subjects into their work. Some of my favorites include: Morandi, Vuillard, Milton Avery, Fairfield Porter, Peter Doig, Merlin James, Jonas Wood, Sanna Annukka, the Weiner Werkstatte, Kat Macleod... to name a few. Let me know what art inspires you!

While you are in our art room, consider yourself an employee of an exciting new Art firm. I’ll train you and evaluate your learning, but sometimes you’ll train yourself or another student. As you gain more training, you’ll gain the confidence to take on projects for real clients.

What Can I Expect From Mr. McQuilling?
• A variety of challenging projects using different media and skills
• Clear instructions and demonstrations for using the materials and doing the projects
• Encouragement and guidance in evaluating your own and your peers’ work constructively

• Respect for your input, ideas, and personal interests

Course Objectives
Comprehensive Objectives
As a result of taking this class, you should be able to:
o Work professionally within a workplace setting.
o Identify the elements of art and principles of design and use them in a decisive manner.
o Evaluate artworks (your work and others’) formally using the elements and principles of art and design, for meaning, and effectiveness.
o Plan art projects according to your own interest and needs.
o Build a design gradually using thumbnail sketches and mockups.
o Create attractive layouts that communicate messages effectively.
o Use color to communicate ideas to others.
o Utilize art history as a tool to inform your own artwork.

Grading
I believe that every one of you is capable of receiving an A in my class, even if you’ve never created artwork before. I give lots of opportunities to improve sagging grades, including redos and extra credit.

How Will My Grade Be Calculated?
Grading is done on a semester basis: we start fresh each semester. Students’ grades will be based on:
• Lessons / handouts
• Quizzes / Tests
• Final studio art projects
• Homework
• Professional conduct / good behavior / workplace readiness

I will use the standard final grade breakdown:
A 90-100% (Exemplary)
B 80-89% (Proficient)
C 70-79% (Partially Proficient)
D 60-69% (Incomplete)
F 59% or below (Failing)

How Will Art Projects be Graded?
Whenever possible, I will provide rubrics for each art project that tell you what I expect for Exemplary, Proficient, Partially Proficient, and Incomplete work. I consider three main things in evaluating student’s artwork:
1. Effort (visible in the work and/or demonstrated in class; spend quality time on your work!)
2. Creativity (how original your work is)
3. Following Directions (did you explore the assignment as given?)

How Will My Behavior in Class Affect My Grade?
Professional Conduct means good behavior and it is a large portion of your grade! I’m assuming everyone is a “good kid.” If your behavior in class is a problem, it will reduce your Professional Conduct grade for the project and subsequently your overall grade. See the “Behavior” section below.
Redos
If you receive a low grade on an assignment, you will have one chance to revise it for an improved grade. This will encourage you to master the subject. Please let me know as soon as you want to resubmit an assignment. There will not be redos on quizzes.
Extra Credit
Opportunities for extra credit will be given every-so-often during a semester. Extra credit assignments will be calculated as “Homework” in my grade book.
Behavior
What Are My Responsibilities?
Since everyone learns about art here, everyone is considered an artist. Get used to thinking of yourself that way! My job is to teach you professionalism in addition to art skills. Professionalism means being respectful to yourself and others around you, and behaving in an acceptable, predictable way.
Art Room Rules
Refer to the Student Handbook in your planner for school-wide rules. We have art room rules too:
• Don’t prevent me from teaching.
• Don’t prevent others from learning.
• Be safe.
• Keep things clean.

What Do those 4 Rules Really Mean Day-to-Day?
Here are some examples to show you what I mean. These are examples. Use your common sense when interpreting these rules.
➢ Don’t prevent me from teaching.
• Don’t speak while I am instructing the class.
• Raise your hand if you wish to speak, and wait for me to call on you.
• Don’t interrupt when I am giving personal attention to another student.
➢ Don’t prevent others from learning.
• Don’t behave in a disruptive or distracting way.
• Don’t engage in lengthy off-topic conversations.
• Keep the volume of your voice down.
• No singing, rapping, or other disruptive noises.
➢ Be safe.
• Don’t throw, toss, flick, or roll anything across the table, floor, or classroom.
• Use classroom materials in a safe manner.
• Don’t behave in any way that threatens harm to anyone or our equipment.
➢ Keep things clean.
• Clean up after yourself so your station is ready for the next student.
• Return classroom materials to the proper storage place.
• Don’t eat in the art room.
• Keep your language clean.
Consequences
If you have forgotten one of the school or art room rules, I will give you a verbal reminder. Willful, severe or repetitive poor behavior will result in one or more of the following consequences:
• student conference
• parent contact
• seat change
• reduction of “professional conduct” grade
• loss of privileges and/or materials
• clean-up duty
• administrative detention
• office referral (Pink slip)
Good Behavior
Keeping our classroom welcoming, safe and interesting depends on everyone. Here’s what I offer if you have a great attitude and behavior:
• A fun, exciting art room where you can learn cool skills.
• I will praise you for your outstanding professionalism.
• I will treat you like a responsible adult.
• 100% of your professional conduct grade.
• The opportunity to work on real projects for school activities and outside exhibitions.

Other Policies and Procedures
Tardies
You are tardy if you are not seated in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. The tardy bell in the art room is my egg timer. This timer will always ring two minutes after the standard late bell. I take attendance the moment it rings. I follow the designated tardy policy of the school. Tardies typically result in detention and failure to complete pre-class, which will affect your grade. I will only excuse a tardy if you receive a written pass from another teacher that has the date and time written in ink. I will usually follow up with an email to verify the excuse. Forging a hall pass is lying and will result in appropriate consequences
Seating
I have assigned seating. Please do not move to another seat without my permission, and please do not ask for this permission before or while I take attendance.
Class Dismissal
I dismiss you from class, not the bell. Make sure you have cleaned up your area and returned any supplies to their storage containers before you go.
All Are Welcome
Every student regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation can expect a safe environment in my classroom. Any prejudicial or derogatory conversations or language will be halted immediately.
Personal Electronics
• Cell phones are never allowed visible in any classroom at NEHS. If you use your phone inside my classroom, you will risk detention or confiscation of your phone.
• Cameras may be used in the classroom with my permission.
• MP3 players are never allowed visible in any classroom at NEHS. If you use your mp3 inside my classroom, you will risk detention or confiscation of your mp3
Hall Pass
You must sign out the hall pass in the composition book on the front table. Don’t ask for permission for a hall pass until I have taken attendance and I am done with instruction. About six minutes should be sufficient for a restroom trip. If you abuse your restroom privilege, you will lose it for a period of time.
Classroom Decor
I like to put useful posters and student work on the walls. If you have additional ideas for how to decorate our art room, I’m all ears!

Caravaggio.com is a great resource for looking at this Italian masters painting. There is a great deal of information and it even arranges his artworks by dimension, location, subject, details and exhibitions.

Review the website and create a small study (small sketch) of one Caravaggio painting that stands out to you. Tell me why you chose this piece and include a small description of the painting; identifying the elements of art and principles of design. Make sure to read the footnotes on each piece, include any interesting facts you have found and your own reactions/ interpretations.

I first heard the Avett Brothers music while driving to lunch with my cousin Kevin. Shortly after that we went to see them play in Perkasie PA in a 100+ year old Theatre. It was among the top 3 best shows I have ever been to. Sometime later I discovered that one of the Avett Brothers (Scott) was an artist, and an exceptional one at that. Art Shop was a smashing success for NEHS this year, we had 3 artists participate and all of them sold several pieces of work.

Mr. Teare had a closing reception for his exhibition of NEHS student work at Temple University's Tyler School of Art & Design on Sunday. The exhibit looked great and was well recieved by the public. Great work team!

Yesterday I stumbled upon a great example of
custom product design that many of you may find interesting. Within
recent years there has been an increasing number of young people in art
room 122 who have a strong interest in sneaker and sneaker culture. One
of the great things about sneaker culture are the limited edition
sneakers produced and the use of artist and their work to customize the
product. This is a great example of both graphic and industrial design,
both are lucrative fields for artists, and how cool would it be to
design sneakers and get PAID

This set of custom vans syndicate sneakers were designed by professional skateboarder and custom motorcycle builder Max Schaaf (4q conditioning). The packaging is based off of vintage Harley Davidson packaging. Very cool stuff.

This homework assignment is due next Friday, October 31st. Please bring it in either handwritten on a blank sheet of paper, or typed.

You can find the color schemes we discussed in class
everywhere around you. In class, at home, downtown, and around
your neighborhood. For this homework assignment, refer back to
your definitions of the six different color schemes
(Monochromatic, complementary, analogous, triadic, warm color
dominance, and cool color dominance), and see if you can spot
one in your daily life. When you find a specific color scheme,
write down the different colors you see and explain why it
fits that scheme. If you happen to have a camera at the time,
be sure to get a snapshot!

Monday Sept. 29th we were fortunate enough to have painter Josh Rickards come speak to us about his work. He is the first in a series of young artists who will be visiting room 122.

Josh shared with us stories about his youth growing up in Florida through working with artist collective Team Lump, how he found his way to Philadelphia, Vox Populi and how all of this has influenced his artworks. Students had an oppurtunity to view slides of his artwork and ask questions. Thanks so much for spending your time with us in 122 Josh!

HOMEWORK #1

Follow the link to view artist Barry McGee's latest exhibition at Ratio 3 in San Francisco. Read the short article and be prepared to answer questions about the images and content of the article.

Barry McGee is a painter/printmaker who found art through skateboarding, surf and graffitti culture on the west coast.

McGee's paintings are very iconic, with central figures dominating abstracted backgrounds of drips, patterns and color fields. He has also painted portraits of street characters on their own empty bottles of liquor, painted flattened spray cans picked up at train yards and painted wrecked vehicles for art shows.

Yet another opportunity to see some great comic book art and get extra credit for it. This time you have until December 7th, because that's the day that Robert Crumb's "Underground" exhibit ends at the Institute of Contemporary Art in West Philadelphia (36th and Sansom). Crumb was born and raised in Philadelphia, and is called by many the "father of underground comics." Admission is free! Bring back some sort of proof that you went to the show, and you will get extra credit.

While you are in our art room, consider yourself an employee of an exciting new Art firm. I’ll train you and evaluate your learning, but sometimes you’ll train yourself or another student. As you gain more training, you’ll gain the confidence to take on projects for real clients.

Course Objectives

Comprehensive Objectives
As a result of taking this class, you should be able to:
o Work professionally within a workplace setting.
o Identify the elements of art and principles of design and use them in a decisive manner.
o Evaluate artworks (your work and others’) formally using the elements and principles of art and design, for meaning, and effectiveness.
o Plan art projects according to your own interest and needs.
o Build a design gradually using thumbnail sketches and mockups.
o Create attractive layouts that communicate messages effectively.
o Use color to communicate ideas to others.
o Utilize art history as a tool to inform your own artwork.

Grading

I believe that every one of you is capable of receiving an A in my class, even if you’ve never created artwork before. I give lots of opportunities to improve sagging grades, including redos and extra credit.

How Will My Grade Be Calculated?

Grading is done on a semester basis: we start fresh each semester. Students’ grades will be based on:
• Lessons / handouts
• Quizzes / Tests
• Final studio art projects
• Homework
• Professional conduct / good behavior / workplace readiness

I will use the standard final grade breakdown:

A 90-100% (Exemplary)
B 80-89% (Proficient)
C 70-79% (Partially Proficient)
D 60-69% (Incomplete)
F 59% or below (Failing)

How Will Art Projects be Graded?

Whenever possible, I will provide rubrics for each art project that tell you what I expect for Exemplary, Proficient, Partially Proficient, and Incomplete work. I consider three main things in evaluating student’s artwork:
1. Effort (visible in the work and/or demonstrated in class; spend quality time on your work!)
2. Creativity (how original your work is)
3. Following Directions (did you explore the assignment as given?)

How Will My Behavior in Class Affect My Grade?

Professional Conduct means good behavior and it is a large portion of your grade! I’m assuming everyone is a “good kid.” If your behavior in class is a problem, it will reduce your Professional Conduct grade for the project and subsequently your overall grade. See the “Behavior” section below.

Redos

If you receive a low grade on an assignment, you will have one chance to revise it for an improved grade. This will encourage you to master the subject. Please let me know as soon as you want to resubmit an assignment. There will not be redos on quizzes.

Extra Credit

Opportunities for extra credit will be given every-so-often during a semester. Extra credit assignments will be calculated as “Homework” in my grade book.
Behavior

What Are My Responsibilities?

Since everyone learns about art here, everyone is considered an artist. Get used to thinking of yourself that way! My job is to teach you professionalism in addition to art skills. Professionalism means being respectful to yourself and others around you, and behaving in an acceptable, predictable way.

Art Room Rules
Refer to the Student Handbook in your planner for school-wide rules. We have art room rules too:
• Don’t prevent me from teaching.
• Don’t prevent others from learning.
• Be safe.
• Keep things clean.

What Do those 4 Rules Really Mean Day-to-Day?
Here are some examples to show you what I mean. These are examples. Use your common sense when interpreting these rules.
➢ Don’t prevent me from teaching.
• Don’t speak while I am instructing the class.
• Raise your hand if you wish to speak, and wait for me to call on you.
• Don’t interrupt when I am giving personal attention to another student.
➢ Don’t prevent others from learning.
• Don’t behave in a disruptive or distracting way.
• Don’t engage in lengthy off-topic conversations.
• Keep the volume of your voice down.
• No singing, rapping, or other disruptive noises.
➢ Be safe.
• Don’t throw, toss, flick, or roll anything across the table, floor, or classroom.
• Use classroom materials in a safe manner.
• Don’t behave in any way that threatens harm to anyone or our equipment.
➢ Keep things clean.
• Clean up after yourself so your station is ready for the next student.
• Return classroom materials to the proper storage place.
• Don’t eat in the art room.
• Keep your language clean.

Consequences

If you have forgotten one of the school or art room rules, I will give you a verbal reminder. Willful, severe or repetitive poor behavior will result in one or more of the following consequences:
• student conference
• parent contact
• seat change
• reduction of “professional conduct” grade
• loss of privileges and/or materials
• clean-up duty
• administrative detention
• office referral (Pink slip)

Good Behavior

Keeping our classroom welcoming, safe and interesting depends on everyone. Here’s what I offer if you have a great attitude and behavior:
• A fun, exciting art room where you can learn cool skills.
• I will praise you for your outstanding professionalism.
• I will treat you like a responsible adult.
• 100% of your professional conduct grade.
• The opportunity to work on real projects for school activities and outside exhibitions.

Other Policies and Procedures

Tardies
You are tardy if you are not seated in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. The tardy bell in the art room is my egg timer. This timer will always ring two minutes after the standard late bell. I take attendance the moment it rings. I follow the designated tardy policy of the school. Tardies typically result in detention and failure to complete pre-class, which will affect your grade. I will only excuse a tardy if you receive a written pass from another teacher that has the date and time written in ink. I will usually follow up with an email to verify the excuse. Forging a hall pass is lying and will result in appropriate consequences.

Seating
I have assigned seating. Please do not move to another seat without my permission, and please do not ask for this permission before or while I take attendance.

Class Dismissal
I dismiss you from class, not the bell. Make sure you have cleaned up your area and returned any supplies to their storage containers before you go.

All Are Welcome
Every student regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation can expect a safe environment in my classroom. Any prejudicial or derogatory conversations or language will be halted immediately.

Personal Electronics
• Cell phones are never allowed visible in any classroom at NEHS. If you use your phone inside my classroom, you will risk detention or confiscation of your phone.
• Cameras may be used in the classroom with my permission.
• MP3 players can be helpful when focusing on an assignment. They are allowed within the following guidelines:
• Don’t use them during instruction.
• Don’t use them during group activities.
• When you are working independently, you may use an MP3 player so long as it is not audible to others.
• Don’t sing along with your music. This is disruptive to others.

Hall Pass
You must sign out the hall pass in the composition book on the front table. Don’t ask for permission for a hall pass until I have taken attendance and I am done with instruction. About six minutes should be sufficient for a restroom trip. If you abuse your restroom privilege, you will lose it for a period of time.

Classroom Decor
I like to put useful posters and student work on the walls. If you have additional ideas for how to decorate our art room, I’m all ears!

Our very own Senior Sofia Freidman won 2nd place in the annual Dad Vail Regatta Poster contest!

Sofia painted the Skuykill river at night to capture the reflective lights of boathouse row.

Sofia was awarded a cash prize for her painting from Dad Vail Regatta Alumni.

1.) Our stencil projects turned out great!

2.) 6th Period had a visit from our in house guest artist Mr. Walker. Mr. Walker is a janitor at NEHS during the day and at night Mr. Walker does comic inspired illustrations on a very impressive scale. The artist's talk was insightful, entertaining and inspiring, Thanks Mr. Walker!

3.) Twilights Saturday night opening w./ No Division Design Syndicate @ SABA 3.15.08

He comes highly recommended from Temple University and is earning a BS in Art Education with a focus in drawing and painting. He hails from Western PA (Johnstown) and currently lives in Philadelphia.

What is Space 1026?
It‘s a tough question, but here are three answers:

Space 1026 has been a 7 year experiment. It has developed from a handful of founders to dozens of co-conspirators. Together we are becoming Space 1026.

Space 1026 is a common excitement for making, producing and creating, not for some outside world of aficionados, but for each other, for our own kind.

Space 1026 is two floors of a building at 11th and Arch. That‘s in Philadelphia. It is a network of dozens of artists who‘ve had studios at the Space, past and present. It is dozens of artists who‘ve had shows at the Space over the last 7 years. It is dozens of artists who come to our events, and participate in our community.

Space 1026 is a community - a creative community - not an institution.

Or you could try and pull some postmodern stuff and say Space 1026 does not exist; but then you‘d have to do some explaining to the mice that eat our leftovers every night.

Space 1026 is not a collaboration! Yes it is! No its not! Yes it is! Exactly.

Walter Benjamin wrote about the angel of history but he probably had us in mind:

“Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing in from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such a violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward.”

That pile of debris; that‘s our Space. But it works. Sometimes.

Or is it just the appearance of a plan when really there is only the faith, in ourselves and in each other.

Art Shop was a huge success this year, with a huge crowd and tons of artists getting together to offer their goods to the public. NEHS students Sofiya Friedman, Sarah Farma, Michael Mizrahi and Isiah Bradley had digital reproductions and original prints available for purchase.

HIGH SCHOOL ART SCHOLARSHIP

Open to all graduating high school seniors internationally who will be 18 yrs of age by May 31, 2008 and entering college for the first time. There is no restriction on subject matter. Accepted medias are painting, photography, mixed media and sculpture.
Top five finalists will be awarded scholarships:

$5,000 Best in Show
$3,000 Excellence in Art,
$2,000 Spirit of Freedom Award
$1,000 Recognition (2 awards).

In addition to scholarship, each of the five finalists will receive airfare and hotel for themselves and two family members to travel to Las Vegas, NV for the award reception on May 31, 2008.

Guest Speaker #2- James Ulmer

Philadelphia based Illustrator James Ulmer spoke with Northeast students today about his journey from Upper Darby High School to the present where he is an illustrator. Mr. Ulmer discussed the process of preparing for college, the changes in his artwork, his personal artistic process and the business end of proposing and acquiring exhibitions and selling work. We were fortunate enough to take a look at Mr. Ulmer print portfolio and even some of his more recent sketchbooks.

Blind Contour.

Many of us are struggling through a difficult drawing technique called "blind contour". This is an exercise where the artist does not lift their pen or pencil and only looks at the object they are drawing. Our desire to create images that are "realistic" often gets in our way when drawing and makes it difficult for us to really see what is in front of us. This is an excercise to train us to slow down and record what we see vs. what we think something should look like. Here are some examples from a Philadelphia based illustrator Matt Sutter.

DUE WEDNESDAY MORNING OCTOBER 31ST

- Obtain a pumpkin- whatever size you can handle. If this is a problem for you, see me privately.

- Create a face out of your pumpkin using any or all of the fllowing:
-Carving (make sure you get permission from your parent or guardian and be careful!)
Please be sure to remove pulp and seeds if you are carving into the pumpkin

- Paint markers white-out or whatever you have at home that will adhere to the pumpkin.
- Add on materials such as cut paper or cardboard, glitter, found objects, cloth, hats. hair, jewelry, etc., etc.

- Your pumpkin could reflect something about YOU: your personality; likes and dislikes; physical features, etc.

-Here's a great website for inspiration.

- In addition to being graded by me and Tyler Intern Ms. Huber, the pumpkins will be judged by an impartial jury (administrators, teachers, and school personnel). Prizes will be awarded for artistic excellence and creativity.

- Judging will take place on Wednesday October 31st, so you MUST bring your pumpkin to Art Room 122 by that date to receive credit and be included in the judging. You will be able to take home your creation on Nov. 1st.

Hey, students from 5th period here! We finally finished our first project!
Yes! Yes! It took us very long to blend everything together from the original piece we received. Now, placing together the other artwork from other students is a whole different story. It was like putting a puzzle piece together but you don’t know what the whole piece looks like all together. Man it was hard. Putting everyone’s piece together was tough for us because of all the different designs we made. Everyone had different types of lines going all other the place while others had a constant movement.

In the end, we think it came out magnificent!

University of the Arts Exhibition

Today was the hanging of our collaborative work "Caution Combustible" with Philadelphia artist Ben Volta. These works were created last Spring in our 7th period Art and Landscape class through a grant from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The pieces were hung in the education wing of the PMA then OneShot Coffee in Northern Liberties prior to landing at UArts Gallery 817 @ 211 S. Broad Street for the next month. There is currently talks of the main work moving permanently to the main school district building on 440 N. Broad St.

During Preclass you will be asked to write a brief description (describing the images, the medium used) as well as your personal interpretation and critique of the piece.

Periods 1-4 are continuing to work dilligently on their Postcard from the future. Students are finalizing their designs in thumbnail sketches and begining to apply materials and build their foundation.

Periods 5 & 6 are blazing ahead with their black and white forgeries which will be part of an exchange with a High School art program in Queens New York. Each student will send one BW line drawing to another student who will base their drawing off of the one they recieved. We hope to propose an art showing at a coffee shop in center city to exhibit the artists work.
